Do you have space for a worm farm?

Use our simple checklist to find out.

Some folks assume they need a big garden to have a worm farm. In reality, worm farms only require one square meter of space and some general protection from extreme temperatures. Basically, if you have room for a wheelie bin or a medium pot plant, you can likely fit a worm farm somewhere.

But where exactly to put it?

When managed correctly, our worm farms don’t smell or attract rodents, so they can be located close to living spaces with no real issues. Many of our members have them tucked just outside the house or garage and they are very happy. One provocative workplace has it right inside their office space!

Follow this simple checklist to see if you have space for a worm farm at your home or office and get an idea of where to position it.

  1. Do you have a spare square meter of outdoor space available?
Think corners of the driveway, a patch of yard, on or under a balcony.

  2. Is this location protected from direct sunlight in summer or heavy frost in winter?
If not, can you create some shade?

  3. Is this location accessible for your area manager to service when they visit each month?

  4. Is this location relatively accessible to your kitchen?
It’s nice to be able to easily add waste to the farm without going for a massive trek.

  5. If this location is exposed to the street, are we able to lock it to something solid?

If you are answering YES to these questions it’s safe to say you could quite happily have a worm farm. This also means much of your organic waste would then become epic, organic fertiliser to boost soil health and grow nutrient dense food. This waste could otherwise end up in a landfill. Producing toxic leachate that may contaminate waterways and produce methane gas, which is 30 times worse than CO2 as a greenhouse gas. Easy wins for climate action!

And… if you are still keen for a worm farm but unsure where it could go, reach out and we can arrange for our area manager to come by and help you find a solution. We love creative problem solving, in fact that’s really what Why Waste is all about. Doing things differently, better, smarter!
