Fruition Horticulture
We visit Ruth, a 'Why Waste Worms' business customer, outside her office.
Fruition Horticulture became a member of Why Waste Worms when they moved office. In their previous office they had a compost, but at their new site this wasn’t an option. Ruth wound up collecting the organic waste in a bucket and taking it home to compost it - a solid commitment to their kaupapa around ethical business!
However taking it home wasn't working so well on the days she wasn't at work or travelling by bike or bus. We see this a lot, where well meaning team members are keen to take on the responsibility, but life gets in the way and the solutions can sometimes have the opposite effect on attitudes towards composting/vermi-composting. Hiring a managed worm farm from Why Waste means that they can process all of their organic waste onsite with the consistency over weeks, months and years without wearing their staff out.
Ruth made some great observations about the impacts of removing biodegradable waste from the rubbish bin. “when you’re not putting the rubbish out every week, you don’t want something stinky in there for the full two or three weeks, this is a great way of getting the potentially stinky stuff out with a natural process”.
“we’re not putting out a rubbish bag that frequently”
She concluded that because of the worm farm they have minimised the frequency of their landfill pickups, and we set an intention to follow up with what kind of impacts that had. We look forward to speaking with her later in this year.
